GOTS organic cotton as our main fabric
One reason many bras aren't breathable is that the fabric is loose and traps heat. Organic cotton is tightly woven to eliminate that sweaty feeling while still letting your body breathe naturally.
We are proud to be the first to make lingerie from organic cotton and pure silk , enjoy the luxuriously soft, superior quality of organic cotton in every piece.
100% pure silk lining
Every JulieMay bra is lined with 100% pure silk, a smooth, luxurious touch that feels soft on the breasts and gentle on allergy-prone and sensitive skin. Pure silk naturally wicks moisture, breathes beautifully and resists allergens and bacteria, so you stay fresh and comfortable all day.

- Sensitive & allergy-prone skin — no harsh dyes, exposed elastics or nickel to trigger a reaction.
- Eczema & psoriasis — smooth silk reduces friction and helps calm flare-prone skin.
- Menopause & hot flushes — breathable cotton and thermoregulating silk wick moisture to keep you cool.
- Post-surgery & postpartum — soft, wireless comfort and moisture-wicking silk for healing, tender skin.
- Nickel & metal allergy — nickel-free fastenings, so there's nothing to irritate.

Organic cotton & silk: your fabric questions, answered
What is JulieMay lingerie actually made from?
Every piece is built around two natural fibres. GOTS-certified organic Pima cotton is the main fabric, and 100% pure silk lines the inside of every bra cup and the gusset of every brief. Cotton gives breathability and structure; silk adds a smooth, cool layer exactly where the garment touches your most sensitive skin. Even the threads, lace and trims are cotton, and the hooks, adjusters and wires are non-metallic, so there is no nickel against your skin.
Why does the fabric of a bra matter so much for your skin?
Your bra sits against some of the most sensitive skin on your body, all day. Four things decide how a fabric feels over a long day: breathability (can heat and moisture escape?), moisture-wicking (does it move sweat away?), softness and friction (is it smooth, or does it rub?) and irritation risk (does it carry dyes, finishes, latex or metals that reactive skin can react to?). The right fabric keeps you cool and dry; the wrong one traps heat and moisture, rubs and can trigger itching or a rash. We go deeper in our guide to choosing the best bra material.
What makes organic cotton good for sensitive skin?
Cotton is breathable, soft and absorbs moisture well, with a low friction and irritation risk, which is why dermatology sources often recommend cotton clothing for eczema-prone skin. We use organic Pima cotton: a longer-staple fibre that is stronger, softer and less prone to pilling, while organic growing avoids the pesticide and chemical residues found in conventional cotton. It is tightly woven, so it breathes and wicks moisture while still giving you support and shape.
Why is every bra lined with pure silk?
Silk is exceptionally smooth, light and cool, and it handles light moisture well, so it feels especially comfortable in friction-prone and sweat-prone areas: under the bust, around the cups and at the gusset. It is a natural protein fibre that is naturally hypoallergenic and antibacterial. That is why we line every bra cup and brief gusset in 100% pure silk — the layer touching you the most is also the gentlest.
Is silk really hypoallergenic?
Yes. Silk is a natural protein fibre that is naturally hypoallergenic and antibacterial, and its smooth surface reduces the rubbing that aggravates reactive skin. It also helps wick moisture and regulate temperature, so skin stays drier and cooler. For allergy-prone, eczema- or psoriasis-prone skin, a smooth, low-friction, breathable layer is usually far easier to tolerate than a rough or synthetic one.
Which fabrics are best to avoid if you have sensitive skin?
Synthetic-heavy fabrics such as polyester, nylon and elastane add stretch and shape, but they can trap heat and moisture against the skin, which many sensitive-skin wearers find less comfortable and which can worsen conditions like eczema and psoriasis. It is also worth watching for exposed elastics, harsh dyes, latex and nickel in hooks and underwires, all common triggers for contact allergies. Synthetics are not wrong for everyone; the real question is whether the fabric and construction suit your skin.
What chemicals does JulieMay leave out of its fabric?
The European Parliament reports that around 3,500 chemical substances are used in textile manufacturing, and more than 350 have hazardous properties; the American Academy of Dermatology notes that some people react to formaldehyde in fabrics. We do not use bleach, fixing agents or other harsh chemical treatments, and we dye in small batches rather than large industrial vats. A verified Intertek lab report confirms that 22 harmful chemicals, including formaldehyde and flame retardants, were not detected in our fabrics. We are also developing a plant-based dye collection for skin that is extra sensitive to dyes.
Is comfort about the fabric, or the way the bra is made?
Both. Even a great fabric can irritate if it is badly built. So we wrap straps, underbands and waistbands in double-layered Pima cotton (no exposed elastic), finish the inside with smooth enclosed French seams, replace stitched-in labels with tag-free printing, and use flexible underwire wherever there is wire at all. Fibre and construction work together to keep everything that touches your skin soft and low-friction. You can read the detail in our Skin Irritation & Fabric Sensitivity Guide.
